MediaMarktSaturn is Europe's leading retail company for consumer electronics and related services.. The company has approximately 1,030 stationary stores across 11 countries, and employs around 50,000 people.

The multinational retailer had a massive IT landscape spread over multiple countries, and they had limited visibility into their application portfolio and application data. Siloed IT architectures existed in multiple countries, which meant that visibility was not centralized and it was inefficient.

"We didn't have a grip on our IT landscape or application portfolio. Our IT was full of redundancies and duplicate applications.”

MediaMarktSaturn needed full visibility of their entire IT landscape and a single, centralized source of truth for application data. This would enable them to better plan IT projects, rationalize their application portfolio, and eliminate redundant and/or duplicate apps.

"The main challenge we had was achieving full transparency into which applications were being used in which country, and how they were being used," said Stefan Zips, Project Manager at MediaMarktSaturn Technology. "We needed to collect all this information in a proper tool."

Application rationalization with SAP LeanIX

MediaMarktSaturn chose SAP LeanIX to enhance their enterprise architecture and achieve full visibility into their IT landscape. They were able to document all of their applications across all of their subsidiaries, and easily see which apps were actually being used and which teams were using them. With SAP LeanIX, EAs could create intuitive visualizations of this data and share them with relevant stakeholders. This transparency led to the discovery of many redundancies and enabled the company to decommission over 10% of their applications within 12 months.

"SAP LeanIX was key to our success in this," said Venkatasubramanian. "It enabled our teams to have their data visualized. Now we have one single source of truth with one unique identifier, which is used over all our systems, and the data is visible for everyone."

Tracking cloud migration rate

SAP LeanIX was also critical to the success of MediaMarktSaturn's large-scale cloud migration. By leveraging easily accessible application data in SAP LeanIX, the company could track and monitor their cloud migration rate and see real-time, accurate information on their progress.

"One of our key KPIs in the project was our cloud migration rate," said Venkatasubramanian. "We wanted to closely monitor our progress toward our goals. With SAP LeanIX, this was clearly visible, and the progress could be quantified for each reporting cycle."

"We've had great support from SAP LeanIX professional services, who helped us at every step over the last year. I'm looking forward to continuing that journey in the years to come."
